a thermogenic type of adipose tissue containing a dark pigment. It arises during embryonic life in certain specific areas in many mammals, including humans, and is prominent in newborns. It remains distinct and conspicuous in adults in only certain species, especially those that hibernate. Cf. white adipose t. Called also brown fat.
