a tank for the aerobic digestion of sewage. Screened and sedimented raw sewage, treated with an inoculum of activated sludge (q.v.), flows slowly or intermittently through the tank while being aerated vigorously. The process oxidizes much of the organic material in the sewage, thus reducing the biological oxygen demand.
