| drug resistance, multiple | Simultaneous resistance to a broad spectrum of structurally and functionally distinct drugs following exposure to a single agent. It is thought to result from the overexpression of genes encoding an integral plasma membrane protein, p-glycoprotein. (12 Dec 1998) |

| drug resistance, neoplasm | Resistance or diminished response of a neoplasm to an antineoplastic agent in humans, animals, or cell or tissue cultures. (12 Dec 1998) |
| impact resistance | The ability of a lens for eyewear to withstand impact without shattering or breaking, i.e., of a 3/8 -inch steel ball dropped 50 feet; criteria for determination of impact resistance are specified by U.S. Regulations. (05 Mar 2000) |
| inductive resistance | The weakening of an alternating electric current by passage through a coil of wire or a condenser. Synonym: inductive resistance. (05 Mar 2000) |
| insecticide resistance | The development by insects of resistance to insecticide. (12 Dec 1998) |
| insulin resistance | Many people with noninsulin-dependent diabetes produce enough insulin, but their bodies do not respond to the action of insulin. This may happen because the person is overweight and has too many fat cells, which do not respond well to insulin. Also, as people age, their body cells lose some of the ability to respond to insulin. Insulin resistance is also linked to high blood pressure and high levels of fat in the blood. Another kind of insulin resistance may happen in some people who take insulin injections. They may have to take very high doses of insulin every day (200 units or more) to bring their blood glucose (sugar) down to the normal range. (09 Oct 1997) |
| internal acoustic foramen | The inner opening of the internal acoustic meatus on the posterior surface of the petrous part of the temporal bone. Synonym: porus acusticus internus, internal acoustic foramen, internal acoustic pore, auditory pore, internal auditory foramen, orifice of internal acoustic meatus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| internal acoustic pore | The inner opening of the internal acoustic meatus on the posterior surface of the petrous part of the temporal bone. Synonym: porus acusticus internus, internal acoustic foramen, internal acoustic pore, auditory pore, internal auditory foramen, orifice of internal acoustic meatus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| isthmus of external acoustic meatus | The narrowest portion of this canal in the bony part near its deep termination. Synonym: isthmus meatus acustici externi. (05 Mar 2000) |
| opening of external acoustic meatus | The orifice of the external acoustic meatus in the tympanic portion of the temporal bone. Synonym: porus acusticus externus, external acoustic foramen, external acoustic pore, external auditory pore, external auditory foramen, orifice of external acoustic meatus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| opening of internal acoustic meatus | The inner opening of the internal acoustic meatus on the posterior surface of the petrous part of the temporal bone. Synonym: porus acusticus internus, internal acoustic foramen, internal acoustic pore, auditory pore, internal auditory foramen, orifice of internal acoustic meatus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| orifice of external acoustic meatus | The orifice of the external acoustic meatus in the tympanic portion of the temporal bone. Synonym: porus acusticus externus, external acoustic foramen, external acoustic pore, external auditory pore, external auditory foramen, orifice of external acoustic meatus. (05 Mar 2000) |

Synonym: porus acusticus internus, internal acoustic foramen, internal acoustic pore, auditory pore, internal auditory foramen, orifice of internal acoustic meatus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tetracycline resistance | Nonsusceptibility of a microbe (usually a bacterium) to the action of tetracycline, which binds to the 30s ribosomal subunit and prevents the normal binding of aminoacyl-trna. (12 Dec 1998) |
| thyroid hormone resistance syndrome | <syndrome> An inherited syndrome of peripheral resistance to thyroid hormones, transmitted as an autosomal recessive trait, characterised by increased serum concentrations of thyroxine and triiodothyronine, increased thyroid hormone binding ratio, and normal to slightly increased thyroid-stimulating hormone and its response to thyrotropin-releasing hormone. The affected persons are euthyroid to slightly hypothyroid. The absence of hypermetabolism and the presence of possible hypothyroidism indicate the existence of partial resistance to the peripheral action of thyroid hormone. (12 Dec 1998) |
