Rusts are a type of fungal disease that generally requires two separate plant species to survive --each at a different point in its life cycle. Like other fungi, rusts reproduce via spores that are easily carried by wind, water, insects, and animals. The best way of controlling rusts (and other fungal diseases) is by removing and destroying infected plant material immediately. Separating or removing one of the two plant hosts will also be effective.
