a genus of large, annoying mosquitoes of the tribe Aedini, subfamily Culicinae; their larvae prey on the larvae of other mosquitoes. Some species, particularly P. ferox´ and P. lut´zii, act as carrier hosts of the eggs of Dermatobia hominis.
