| UDP-N-acetylglucosamine-peptide beta-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase | <enzyme> Responsible for the addition of o-linked n-acetylglucosamine to proteins Registry number: EC 2.4.1.- Synonym: udp-glcnac-peptide-glcnac-transferase, glcnac transferase (26 Jun 1999) |

| formyl peptide | <biochemistry> Informal term for small peptides with a formylated N terminal methionine and usually a hydrophobic amino acid at the carboxy terminal end (fMetLeuPhe is the most commonly used). These peptides stimulate the motor and secretory activities of leucocytes, particularly neutrophils and monocytes, that have a specific receptor (about 60 kD) of high affinity (Kd approximately 10exp 8M). Leucocytes show chemotaxis towards formyl peptides but the term chemotactic peptides understates the range of activities the molecules will trigger. Thought to be synthetic analogues of bacterial signal sequences though this is unproven. The leucocytes of many animals (e.g. Pig, cow, chicken) do not respond. (18 Nov 1997) |
| leader peptide | <molecular biology> In the regulation of gene expression for enzymes concerned with amino acid synthesis in prokaryotes, the leader sequence codes for the leader peptide that contains several residues of the amino acid being regulated. Transcription is closely linked to translation and if translation is retarded by limited supply of amino acyl tRNA for the specific amino acid, the mode of transcription of the leader sequence permits full transcription of the operon genes, otherwise complete transcription of the leader sequence prematurely terminates transcription of the operon. | lysergyl peptide synthetase | <enzyme> Multifunctional enzyme which forms non-cyclol d-lysergyl peptide lactams; consists of two polypeptide chains - lps 1 binds the 3 amino acids (ala, phe and pro) of the peptide nucleus and lps 2 binds d-lysergic acid Registry number: EC 6.3.2.- Synonym: d-lysergylpeptide synthetase (26 Jun 1999) |
| adenoviruses, human | Species of the genus mastadenovirus, causing a wide range of diseases in humans. Infections are mostly asymptomatic, but can be associated with diseases of the respiratory, ocular, and gastrointestinal systems. (12 Dec 1998) |
| adenovirus infections, human | Respiratory and conjunctival infections caused by 33 identified serotypes of human adenoviruses. (12 Dec 1998) |
| antigens, human platelet | Human alloantigens expressed only on platelets, specifically on platelet membrane glycoproteins. These platelet-specific antigens are immunogenic and can result in pathological reactions to transfusion therapy. (12 Dec 1998) |
| bites, human | Bites inflicted by humans. (12 Dec 1998) |
| bonding, human-pet | The emotional attachment of individuals to pets. (12 Dec 1998) |
| packed human blood cells | Whole blood from which plasma has been removed; may be prepared any time during the dating period of the whole blood from which it is derived, but not later than six days after the blood has been drawn if separation of plasma and cell's is achieved by centrifugation. | papilloma virus, human | A family of over 60 viruses responsible forcausing warts. The majority of the viruses produce warts on the hands, fingers, and even the face. most of these viruses are innocuous, causing nothing more than cosmetic concerns. Several types of HPV are confined primarily to the moist skin of the genitals, producing genital warts and elevating the risk for cancer of the cervix. These viruses that cause wartlike growths on the genitals and contrribute to cancer of the cervix are sexually transmitted. (12 Dec 1998) |
| parainfluenza virus 1, human | The type species of paramyxovirus also called haemadsorption virus 2 (ha2), which causes laryngotracheitis in humans, especially children. (12 Dec 1998) |
| parainfluenza virus 2, human | A species of rubulavirus associated particularly with acute laryngotracheitis (croup) in children aged 6 months to 3 years. (12 Dec 1998) |
| parainfluenza virus 3, human | A species of paramyxovirus frequently isolated from small children with pharyngitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia. (12 Dec 1998) |
| genetic human male | An individual with a karyotype containing a Y chromosome, an individual whose cell nuclei do not contain Barr sex chromatin bodies, which are normally present in females. Patients with ambiguous sexual development and those with Turner's syndrome are classed as genetic male's or genetic females according to the absence or presence of Barr bodies even though their sex chromosome complement may suggest otherwise.
