hemiazygos vein <anatomy, vein> Formed by the merger of the left ascending lumbar vein with the left subcostal vein or a communication from the inferior vena cava, it pierces the left crus of the diaphragm, ascends along the left side of the bodies of the lower thoracic vertebrae, opposite the eighth vertebra, crosses the midline behind the aorta, thoracic duct, and oesophagus, and empties into the azygos vein, sometimes in common with the accessory hemiazygos vein.
Synonym: vena hemiazygos, vena azygos minor inferior.

hemibody irradiation Irradiation of one half or both halves of the body in the treatment of disseminated cancer or widespread metastases. It is used to treat diffuse metastases in one session as opposed to multiple fields over an extended period. The more frequent treatment modalities are upper hemibody irradiation (uhbi) or lower hemibody irradiation (lhbi). Less common is mid-body irradiation (mbi). In the treatment of both halves of the body sequentially, hemibody irradiation permits radiotherapy of the whole body with larger doses of radiation than could be accomplished with whole-body irradiation. It is sometimes called "systemic" hemibody irradiation with reference to its use in widespread cancer or metastases. (p. Rubin et al. Cancer, vol 55, p2210, 1985)

hemic calculus An angiolith or concretion of coagulated blood.
Synonym: hemic calculus.
(05 Mar 2000)
hemic distomiasis Disease (bilharzia) caused by digenetic trematode worms of the genus Schistosoma, the adults of which live in the urinary or mesenteric blood vessels. Eggs shed by the female worms pass to the outside in the urine or faeces, but many also lodge in and obstruct the blood flow in the liver. Eosinophils seem to be particularly important in the killing of the invasive larval stage (schistosomulum). Evasion of the host's immune response by adult schistosomes seems to involve the acquisition of a coat of host cell surface material by the parasite.
(18 Nov 1997)
hemic murmur A cardiac or vascular murmur heard in anaemic persons who have no valvular lesion, probably due to the increased blood velocity and turbulence that characterises anaemia.
