| Golgi tendon o. |
an encapsulated nerve ending found in tendons of mammalian muscles and acting as a mechanoreceptor; arranged in series with the muscle, it is sensitive to mechanical distortion induced by either passive stretch of the tendon or isometric contraction of the muscle and thus signals muscle tension, being the receptor responsible for the lengthening reaction, or clasp-knife reflex. Called also Golgi's corpuscle, tendon o. or spindle, and neurotendinous o. or spindle.

| Golgi type I n.’s |
pyramidal neurons with very long axons, that leave the gray matter of the central nervous system, traverse the white matter, and terminate in the periphery; called also Golgi type I cells.

|
| Golgi type II n.’s |
stellate neurons with short axons that do not pass out of the gray matter in which the cell body lies, and are especially numerous in the cerebral and cerebellar cortices and in the retina. Called also Golgi type II cells.

|
| Golgi z. |
the intracellular zone close to the nucleus and containing the Golgi complex; in most secretory cells, it is between the nucleus and the apical surface through which expulsion of the secretion occurs.
