| dominant gene |
Genes in chromosomes are present in pairs. Sometimes the two genes, which determine a particular trait (such as hair colour) will actually code for two types of characteristics (such as brown hair and black hair). If one gene is dominant then only its character is expressed and not that of the other gene. Cf. recessive gene.
