| dorsal venous network of hand | A superficial network of veins on the dorsum of the hand emptying into the cephalic and the basilic veins. Synonym: rete venosum dorsale manus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| dural venous sinuses | Endothelium-lined venous channels in the dura mater. Synonym: sinus durae matris, cerebral sinuses, cranial sinuses, sinuses of dura mater, venous sinuses. (05 Mar 2000) |
| internal carotid venous plexus | A venous network around the internal carotid artery in the carotid canal of the temporal bone, connecting with the cavernous sinus and internal jugular vein. Synonym: plexus venosus caroticus internus, internal carotid (nervous) plexus, plexus caroticus internus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| total anomalous pulmonary venous return | <radiology> (TAPVR) admixture lesion: cyanosis, increased pulmonary blood flow, must have L to R shunt for survival (e.g., atrial septal defect) associated with, atrial septal defect, asplenia (12 Dec 1998) |
| total or partial anomalous pulmonary venous connections | Connections in which some or all of the pulmonary veins connect to the right atrium or one of its tributaries. (05 Mar 2000) |
| jugular venous arch | A connecting vein between the two anterior jugular veins in the suprasternal space. Synonym: arcus venosus juguli. (05 Mar 2000) |
| uterine venous plexus | The plexiform veins that lie along the sides of the uterus in the broad ligament. Synonym: plexus venosus uterinus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| fissure of venous ligament | A deep cleft extending from the porta hepatis and the inferior vena cava between the left lobe and the caudate lobe; it lodges the ligamentum venosum and is thus a vestige of the fossa of the ductus venosus. Synonym: fissura ligamenti venosi, fissure of venous ligament. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral venous lacunae | Lateral expansions of the superior sagittal sinus of the dura mater, often increasing in width with advancing age until, in the very old, they may extend two centimeters lateral to the midline; the endothelium-lined lumen of the lacunae are usually reduced to a spongelike labyrinth by numerous arachnoid granulations and dural trabeculae. Synonym: lacunae laterales, lateral lacunae, lateral lakes, parasinoidal sinuses. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ABO blood group | <haematology> The major human blood type system which describes the oligosaccharide glycoprotein antigens found on the surface of human blood cells. According to the type of antigen present, a person may be assigned a blood type of A, B, AB or O. A second type of antigen, the Rh factor, renders a positive or negative blood type. The ABO blood group system is important because it determines who can donate blood to or accept blood from whom. Type A or AB blood will cause an immune reaction in people with type B blood and type B and AB blood will cause a reaction in people with type A blood. Conversely, type O blood has no A or B antigens, so people with type O blood are universal donors. And since AB blood already produces both antigens, people who are type AB can accept any of the other blood types without suffering an immune reaction. (04 Jul 1999) |
| Almen's test for blood | Glacial acetic acid, gum guaiac solution, and hydrogen peroxide are added to an aqueous suspension of the suspected stain; if occult blood or blood pigment is present, a blue colour develops. Synonym: guaiac test, Schonbein's test, van Deen's test. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arterial blood | Blood that is oxygenated in the lungs, found in the left chambers of the heart and in the arteries, and relatively bright red. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arterial blood gas | A test which analyses arterial blood for oxygen, carbon dioxide and bicarbonate content in addition to blood pH. Used to test the effectiveness of respiration. Acronym: ABG (17 Oct 1997) |
| blood | <haematology> Considered a circulating tissue composed of a fluid portion (plasma) with suspended formed elements (red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets). Arterial blood is the means by which oxygen and nutrients are transported to tissues, venous blood is the means by which carbon dioxide and metabolic by-products are transported for excretion.
