tick p. a progressive ascending type of flaccid paralysis seen in children and domestic animals following the bite of certain ticks. In the northwestern United States and western Canada it is usually caused by Dermacentor andersoni, and in other parts of the world numerous other ticks have been implicated, including species of Ixodes, Haemaphysalis, and Rhipicephalus. It is usually the result of toxins from the tick's saliva that enter the central nervous system of the host.
