a lymphocyte that matires in the thymus and expresses aT cell a receptor CD4 or CD8. CD4 cells are generally termed helper cells and are MHC II restricted, that is, they only respond to antigen presented by special antigen presenting cells. CD8 are cytotoxic, or killer, lymphocites. After exposure to altered cells, and with external chemical signals, these cells are responsibe for the destruction of internally infected cells. from Kuby
