any of several techniques for the production of sharply circumscribed lesions in specific tiny areas of pathologic tissue in deep-seated structures of the central nervous system. The site to be worked on is localized with three-dimensional coordinates; precise images, obtained usually with computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, may be compared with those in a stereotactic atlas. An arc guidance system is used to direct the electrode or other lesion-producing instrument; methods of producing lesions include heat, cold, x-rays, and ultrasound. See also stereotactic technique, under technique. Called also stereoencephalotomy, stereotaxy, and stereotactic neurosurgery.
