| severe acute respiratory syndrome |
(SARS): first reported in China in November 2002, SARS is a contagious and sometimes fatal respiratory illness that has spread worldwide. Symptoms resemble pneumonia or influenza and include fever, headaches, body aches and dry coughing. Although knowledge of the disease is not concrete, scientists hypothesize that a new and unusual coronavirus, a group of viruses that normally produce mild respiratory problems, may be the cause.
