a febrile disease occurring as a delayed sequela of infections with group A beta-hemolytic streptococci and characterized by multiple focal inflammatory lesions of connective tissue, especially of the heart (rheumatic heart disease), blood vessels, and joints (polyarthritis), and by Aschoff bodies in the myocardium and skin. Onset is usually signaled by sudden fever and joint pain, followed by manifestations of heart and pericardial disease, abdominal pain, skin changes, and chorea. Atypical manifestations may also be seen, particularly in adults. Called also acute articular rheumatism, acute rheumatic fever or arthritis, and polyarthritis rheumatica acuta.
