a circular thickening and indentation occurring in normal labor going around the junction of the isthmus and corpus uteri. It may be normal, delineating the upper contracting portion and the lower dilating portion (physiologic retraction r.); or it may be abnormally persistent such as in prolonged labor or certain other labor conditions, obstructing expulsion of the fetus (pathologic retraction r.).
