sensory root of ciliary ganglion Sensory fibres passing from the eyeball through the ciliary ganglion to their cell bodies in the trigeminal ganglion via the nasociliary nerve.
Synonym: radix sensoria ganglii ciliaris, ramus communicans nervi nasociliaris cum ganglio ciliari, radix nasociliaris, long root of ciliary ganglion, nasociliary root, radix longa ganglii ciliaris.
(05 Mar 2000)
sensory root of pterygopalatine ganglion <anatomy, nerve> The ganglionic branches, two short sensory branches of the maxillary nerve in the pterygopalatine fossa, the fibres of which pass through the pterygopalatine ganglion without synapse.
Synonym: radix sensoria ganglii pterygopalatini, rami ganglionici nervi maxillaris, rami ganglionares, nervi pterygopalatini, nervi sphenopalatini, pterygopalatine nerves, sensory root of pterygopalatine ganglion.
(05 Mar 2000)
sensory root of trigeminal nerve <anatomy, nerve> The large sensory root of the trigeminal (or fifth cranial) nerve, extending from the semilunar ganglion into the pons through the middle cerebellar peduncle or brachium pontis, immediately lateral to the small motor root.
Synonym: radix sensoria nervi trigemini, portio major nervi trigemini.
(05 Mar 2000)
sensory speech centre The region of the cerebral cortex thought to be essential for understanding and formulating coherent, propositional speech; it encompasses a large region of the parietal and temporal lobes near the lateral sulcus of the left cerebral hemisphere; corresponding approximately to Brodmann's areas 40, 39, and 22.
Synonym: sensory speech centre, Wernicke's area, Wernicke's field, Wernicke's region, Wernicke's zone.
(05 Mar 2000)
sensory system agents Drugs that act on neuronal sensory receptors resulting in an increase, decrease, or modification of afferent nerve activity.
(12 Dec 1998)
sensory thresholds The minimum amount of stimulus energy necessary to elicit a sensory response.
(12 Dec 1998)
sensory tract See: lemniscus.
(05 Mar 2000)
somatic sensory cortex Somatosensory cortex, the region of the cerebral cortex receiving the somatic sensory radiation from the ventrobasal nucleus of the thalamus; it represents the primary cortical processing mechanism for sensory information originating at the body surfaces (touch) and in deeper tissues such as muscle, tendons, and joint capsules (position sense); it corresponds approximately to Brodmann's areas 1, 2, 3 on the postcentral gyrus.
Synonym: somesthetic area.
(05 Mar 2000)
neuropathies, hereditary motor and sensory A group of slowly progressive inherited disorders in which the predominant involvement is the peripheral motor neurons with lesser involvement of the peripheral sensory neurons. Neuronal degeneration and atrophy are characteristic of these disorders. Some of the associated characteristics are phytanic acid excess, optic atrophy, and retinitis pigmentosa.
(12 Dec 1998)
neuropathies, hereditary sensory and autonomic A group of inherited disorders in which there is selective involvement of the peripheral sensory and autonomic neurons and degeneration of fibres by axonal atrophy and degeneration. Five types of disorders have been described and classified type I through type v.
(12 Dec 1998)
acute primary haemorrhagic meningoencephalitis A disease characterised by acute onset of fever, followed by convulsions, delirium, and coma, and associated with perivascular demyelination and haemorrhagic foci in the central nervous system.
Synonym: acute primary haemorrhagic meningoencephalitis, Strumpell's disease.
(05 Mar 2000)
acyclic monoterpene primary alcohol - NADP oxidoreductase <enzyme> From catmint nepeta racemosa; involved in the biosynthesis of iridoid monoterpenes; oxidises geraniol, nerol, and their 10-hydroxy derivatives in the presence of nadp(+).
Registry number: EC 1.1.1.-
Synonym: monoterpene primary alcohol - nadp oxidoreductase, ampano
(26 Jun 1999)
anterior primary division <anatomy, nerve> The larger, anterolaterally-directed major terminal branch (with the dorsal primary ramus) of all 31 pairs of mixed spinal nerves, formed at the intervertebral foramen. Most ventral primary rami, especially those involved in the innervation of the limbs, participate in the formation of the major nerve plexuses (cervical, brachial, and lumbosacral) and lose their identities. Most in the thoracic region, however, remain separate from adjacent rami to become the intercostal and subcostal nerves. Ventral primary rami provide innervation to the anterolateral body wall and trunk. Nomina Anatomica lists ventral primary rami as "rami ventrales" for each group of spinal nerves: 1) cervical (nervorum cervicalium ), 2) thoracic (nervorum thoracicorum ), 3) lumbar (nervorum lumbalium ), 4) sacral (nervorum sacralium )m, and 5) coccygeal (nervi coccygei ).
Synonym: ramus ventralis nervi spinalis, anterior primary division.
(05 Mar 2000)
aphasia, primary progressive A type of aphasia appearing gradually and gradually worsening without any major change in other cognitive functions. It is regarded by some authors as a syndrome which may be due to various degenerative diseases of the cerebral cortex (notably alzheimer disease, owing to its frequency), while others see in it an autonomous disease related to a neuropathological process that is distinct from the main degenerative dementias. The principal clinical peculiarity of primary progressive aphasia is that it spares the patient's autonomy for a long time, but ultimately turns into global dementia.
(12 Dec 1998)
ventral primary rami of cervical spinal nerves See: ventral primary ramus of spinal nerve.
Synonym: rami ventrales nervorum cervicalium.
