Medical prescription is an instruction from the physician for the pharmacist to issue, or prepare if necessary, a certain drug for a specific patient; the prescription form has several parts including formal matters dealing with the patient and the physician prescribing the drug; the validity of the prescription is limited ?usually to 7 days, while a prescription for antibiotics is only valid for 3 days and a prescription issued by an emergency medical service only 1 day.

Any drug or medicine required to bear the following wording, "Caution: Federal law prohibits dispensing without prescription." Insulin or drugs licensed or accepted for a specific diagnosis as listed in the US Pharmacopoedia Publication, Drug Information for Health Care Professionals, are also considered prescription drugs. Drugs in FDA phase I, II or III testing are not covered.
