| implant denture substructure | The metal framework which is placed beneath the soft tissues in contact with, or embedded into, bone for the purpose of supporting an implant denture superstructure. (05 Mar 2000) |

| interim denture | A dental prosthesis to be used for a short interval of time for reasons of esthetics, mastication, occlusal support, or convenience, or to condition the patient to accept an artificial substitute for missing natural teeth until more definite prosthetic dental treatment can be provided. Synonym: provisional denture, temporary denture. (05 Mar 2000) |
| overlay denture | A complete denture that is supported by both soft tissue and natural teeth that have been altered so as to permit the denture to fit over them. The altered teeth may have been fitted with short or long copings, locking devices, or connecting bars. Synonym: bar joint denture, hybrid prosthesis, overdenture, telescopic denture. (05 Mar 2000) |
| telescopic denture | A complete denture that is supported by both soft tissue and natural teeth that have been altered so as to permit the denture to fit over them. The altered teeth may have been fitted with short or long copings, locking devices, or connecting bars. Synonym: bar joint denture, hybrid prosthesis, overdenture, telescopic denture. (05 Mar 2000) |
| temporary denture | A dental prosthesis to be used for a short interval of time for reasons of esthetics, mastication, occlusal support, or convenience, or to condition the patient to accept an artificial substitute for missing natural teeth until more definite prosthetic dental treatment can be provided. Synonym: provisional denture, temporary denture. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tinted denture base | A denture base that simulates the colouring and shading of natural oral tissues. (05 Mar 2000) |
| transitional denture | A partial denture which is to serve as a temporary prosthesis to which teeth will be added as more teeth are lost, and which will be replaced after postextraction tissue changes have occurred; a transitional denture may become an interim denture when all of the teeth have been removed from the dental arch. (05 Mar 2000) |
| treatment denture | A dental prosthesis used for the purpose of treating or conditioning the tissues which are called upon to support and retain a denture base. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trial denture | A setup of artificial teeth so fabricated that it may be placed in the patient's mouth to verify esthetics, for the making of records, or for any other operation deemed necessary before final completion of the denture. Synonym: wax model denture. (05 Mar 2000) |
| fixed partial denture | A restoration of one or more missing teeth which cannot be readily removed by the patient or dentist; it is permanently attached to natural teeth or roots which furnish the primary support to the appliance. Synonym: bridge. (05 Mar 2000) |
| full denture | A dental prosthesis which is a substitute for the lost natural dentition and associated structures of the maxillae or mandible. Synonym: full denture. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Abbe test plate | <equipment> A long, wedge-shaped coverslip about 0.20 mm thick at one end and 0.10 to 0.12 mm at the other end coated chemically with a silver film on which are ruled horizontal lines. at each variation in thickness of 0.01 mm there are vertical lines. By means of oblique illumination and by focusing on different portions of the plate, it is possible to determine the optimum coverslip thickness for any objective and also, for microscopes with drawtubes, the tube length for best objective performance. The approximate freedom from spherical and chromatic aberrations can also be estimated. Small isolated bits of silver near the edges of the lines form good objects for the star test (05 Aug 1998) |
| alar plate of neural tube | The dorsal division of the lateral walls of the neural tube in the embryo; it gives rise to neurons relaying afferent impulses to higher centres; in the adult such neurons compose the sensory nuclei of the spinal cord and brainstem. Synonym: lamina alaris, alar plate of neural tube, dorsolateral plate of neural tube, lamina dorsalis, wing plate. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anal plate | The anal portion of the cloacal plate. (05 Mar 2000) |
| axial plate | The primitive streak of an embryo. (05 Mar 2000) |
