| LBPF | long bone or pelvic fracture |
|---|---|
| MODS | medically oriented data system; multiple-organ dysfunction syndrome |
| MOF | marine oxidation/fermentation; methotrexate, Oncovin, and fluorouracil; multiple organ failure |
| MOFS | multiple organ failure syndrome |

| end organ | The special structure containing the terminal of a nerve fibre in peripheral tissue such as muscle, tissue, skin, mucous membrane, or glands. See: ending. (05 Mar 2000) |

| Jacobson's organ | A specialised part of the olfactory system located anteriorly in the nasal cavity within the nasal septum. Chemosensitive cells of the vomeronasal organ project via the vomeronasal nerve to the accessory olfactory bulb. The primary function of this organ appears to be in sensing pheromones which regulate reproductive and other social behaviours. While the structure has been thought absent in higher primate adults, data now suggests it may be present in adult humans. (12 Dec 1998) |
| floating organ | An organ with loose attachments, permitting its displacement. Synonym: floating organ, ptotic organ. (05 Mar 2000) |
| flower-spray organ of Ruffini | One of the two types of sensory nerve ending associated with the neuromuscular spindle (the other being the annulospiral ending); in this type, the fibre branches spread out upon the surface of the intrafusal fibres like a spray of flowers. Synonym: flower-spray organ of Ruffini. (05 Mar 2000) |
| foetal organ maturity | <embryology> Functional competence of specific foetal organs or body systems. In humans, it is usually assessed by analysis of amniotic fluid, as in the assessment of foetal lung maturity by analysis for components of pulmonary surfactant. (08 Mar 2000) |
| lateral line sense organ | A structure in fish consisting of a long groove or canal extending along each side of the trunk and tail and branching in the head region; the groove or tube is lined with neuroepithelial cells, some of which are in groups known as neuromasts; its function appears to be the detection of vibrations of low frequency. Synonym: neuromast organ. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior pelvic exenteration | Removal of the urinary bladder, lower parts of the ureter, vagina, uterus, adnexa, and adjacent lymph nodes; a urinary diversion is necessary. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anteroposterior diameter of the pelvic inlet | Distance from the promontory of the sacrum to the upper posterior edge of the pubic symphysis. Synonym: anteroposterior diameter of the pelvic inlet, conjugata vera, conjugate axis, conjugate diameter of pelvic inlet, diameter mediana, internal conjugate, true conjugate. (05 Mar 2000) |
| parietal pelvic fascia | Including the obturator fascia, covers the muscles that pass from the interior of the pelvis to the thigh. Synonym: fascia pelvis parietalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| visceral pelvic fascia | Covers the pelvic organs and surrounds vessels and nerves in the subperitoneal space. Synonym: endopelvic fascia, fascia pelvis visceralis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pelvic | <anatomy> Pertaining to the pelvis. (18 Nov 1997) |
| pelvic abscess | An abscess in the pelvic peritoneal cavity, developing as a complication of diffuse peritonitis or of localised peritonitis associated with abdominal or pelvic inflammatory disease, such as salpingitis; the pus frequently collects in the rectovesical or rectouterine pouch. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pelvic axis | A hypothetical curved line joining the centre point of each of the four planes of the pelvis, marking the centre of the pelvic cavity at every level. Synonym: axis pelvis, plane of pelvic canal. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pelvic brim | The upper opening of the true pelvis, bounded anteriorly by the pubic symphysis and the pubic crest on either side, laterally by the iliopectineal lines, and posteriorly by the promontory of the sacrum. Synonym: apertura pelvis superior, aditus pelvis, first parallel pelvic plane, pelvic brim, pelvic inlet, pelvic plane of inlet, plane of inlet. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pelvic canal | The passage from the superior to the inferior aperture of the pelvis. (05 Mar 2000) |
