Each piece within a koan exists in one of three "orientations": "upright", "flat", or "weird". A piece is upright when it's pointing straight upward, with its base parallel to the table, either on it or above it. A piece is flat when its lowest triangular side is parallel to the table, either on it or above it. A piece is "weird" if it's neither upright nor flat. Orientation is the term used for the cameras position and aiming in space. The orientation of a camera is defined by its coordinates (X,Y,Z) and by its aiming direction (defined by three angles). GSI's AutoStart and Resection procedures are used to accurately determine the camera's orientation.
