oncorhynchus A genus of the family salmonidae (salmons and trouts). They are named for their hooked (onco) nose (rhynchus). They are usually anadromous and occasionally inhabit freshwater. They can be found in north pacific coastal areas from japan to california and adjacent parts of the arctic ocean. Salmon and trout are popular game and food fish. Various species figure heavily in genetic, metabolism, and hormone research.
(12 Dec 1998)
oncorhynchus keta An anadromous species of salmon found in the streams of the pacific coast from sacramento north, and also common in japan. It is used frequently in genetic and other medical research. It is called dog salmon and chum salmon, the latter name possibly from chinook jargon for spots or writing, with reference to its body markings.
(12 Dec 1998)
oncorhynchus kisutch An anadromous species of salmon ranging from the arctic and pacific oceans to monterey bay, california and inhabiting ocean and coastal streams. It is familiarly known as the coho or silver salmon. It is relatively small but its light-coloured flesh is of good flavor.
(12 Dec 1998)
oncorhynchus mykiss A large stout-bodied, sometimes anadromous, trout found in still and flowing waters of the pacific coast from southern california to alaska. It has a greenish back, a whitish belly, and pink, red, or lavender stripes on the sides, with usually a sprinkling of black dots. It is highly regarded as a sport and food fish. Its former name was salmo gairdneri. The sea-run rainbow trouts are often called steelheads. Redband trouts refer to interior populations of rainbows.
(12 Dec 1998)
oncornaviruses The family of retroviruses (Retroviridae) that can cause tumours. They are enveloped by membrane derived from the plasma membrane of the host cell, from which they are released by budding without lysing the cell. Within each virion is a pair of single stranded RNA molecules. Replication involves a DNA intermediate made on an RNA template by the enzyme reverse transcriptase.

Synonym: oncosphere embryo.

oncostatin M <growth factor> Multifunctional cytokine (28 kD) with structural and functional similarities to IL-6 and LIF (part of the GM-CSF family of cytokines). Produced by activated T-cells, inhibits tumour cell growth and induces IL-6 production by endothelial cells via the tyrosine kinase p62yes.

  • Oncogene Proteins v-fos - »õâ Transforming proteins coded by fos oncogenes. These proteins have been found in the Finkel-Biskis-Jinkins (FBJ-MSV) and Finkel-Biskis-Reilly (FBR-MSV) murine sarcoma viruses which induce osteogenic sarcomas in mice. The FBJ-MSV v-fos gene encodes a p55-kDa protein and the FBR-MSV v-fos gene encodes a p75-kDa fusion protein.

oncogenic osteomalacia oncogenous osteomalacia, osteomalacia occurring in association with usually benign mesenchymal neoplasms. The tumors appear to produce a substance that impairs renal tubular functions such as phosphate transport and hydroxylation of 25-hydroxyvitamin D; hypophosphatemia secondary to reduced renal resorption of phosphate is a major cause of the bone disease.

onanism Masturbation is the manual excitation of the sexual organs, most often to the point of orgasm. It can refer to excitation either by oneself or by another (see mutual masturbation), but commonly refers to such activities performed alone. It is part of a larger set of activities known as autoeroticism, which also includes the use of sex toys and non-genital stimulation. There are also masturbation machines used to simulate intercourse. ...
