A term used to describe celestial objects which have a fuzzy, or nebulous, appearance (from the Latin for cloud.), such as gas, or dust, clouds. Galaxies were once described thus.

The term nebula was originally used for fuzzy bright objects. Now we know, since Hubble, that most of the fuzzy sky objects called nebula are usually galaxies, and we try to reserve the term nebula for clouds of gas and dust. See SEDS
