| myelocytic | Pertaining to or characterised by myelocytes. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| myelocytic crisis | A temporary but conspicuous and sudden increase in cells of the myelocytic series in the circulating blood. (05 Mar 2000) |
| myelocytic leukaemia | <haematology, tumour> A form of leukaemia characterised by an uncontrolled proliferation of myelopoietic cells in the bone marrow and in extramedullary sites, and the presence of large numbers of immature and mature granulocytic forms in various tissues (and organs) and in the circulating blood. The total count may range from 1000 (aleukaemic variety) to several hundred thousand per cu mm. The predominant cell is usually of the neutrophilic series, but, in a few instances, eosinophilic or basophilic granulocytes, or even megakaryocytes, may represent the chief form; early in granulocytic leukaemia, the circulating blood may contain excessive numbers of all of the granulocytic forms. Synonym: leukaemic myelosis, myelocytic leukaemia, myelogenic leukaemia, myelogenous leukaemia, myeloid leukaemia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| myelocytic leukemoid reaction | Leukocytosis of at least moderate degree, e.g., 50,000 or more per cu mm, with a few immature forms, e.g., 1 or 2% myelocytes, but chiefly mature polymorphonuclear leukocytes in the circulating blood; may be observed in association with tuberculosis, chronic osteomyelitis, various types of empyema, malaria, pneumococcal pneumonia, meningococcal meningitis, Hodgkin's disease, and metastases of carcinoma in the bone marrow. (05 Mar 2000) |
| myelocytoma | A nodular focus or fairly well-circumscribed, relatively dense accumulation of myelocytes, as in certain tissues of persons with myelocytic leukaemia. Origin: myelocyte + G. -oma, tumour (05 Mar 2000) |
| myelocytomatosis | 1. A form of tumour involving chiefly the myelocytes. Synonym: leukochloroma. 2. A rare leukosis of fowl marked by the presence of white tumours composed of myeloid cells, located principally along the sternum and in the liver. (05 Mar 2000) |
| myelocytosis | The occurrence of abnormally large numbers of myelocytes in the circulating blood, or tissues, or both. Origin: myelocyte + G. -osis, condition (05 Mar 2000) |
| myelodiastasis | Softening and destruction of the spinal cord. Origin: myelo-+ G. Diastasis, separation (05 Mar 2000) |
| myelodysplasia | Abnormal or defective formation of the bone marrow cells. Origin: Gr. Plassein = to form (27 Sep 1997) |
| myelodysplastic syndrome | <syndrome> A group of disorders characterised by low white blood cell counts, low platelet counts, and, in some cases, increased monocytes. The primary problem is in the bone marrow cellularity. (27 Sep 1997) |
| myelodysplastic syndromes | Conditions in which the bone marrow shows qualitative and quantitative changes suggestive of a preleukaemic process, but having a chronic course that does not necessarily terminate as acute leukaemia. (12 Dec 1998) |
| myelofibrosis | A progressive disease of the bone marrow where neoplastic bone marrow stem cells lodge and grow in multiple sites outside the bone marrow. Typically, there is enlargement of the spleen and a gradual replacement of the bone marrow elements by fibrosis (scarring), progressive anaemia and variable changes in the number of white blood cells and platelets. Diagnosis is by bone marrow biopsy. There is no definitive treatment for this disorder that has been shown to affect life span favorably. (27 Sep 1997) |
| myelogenesis | 1. Development of bone marrow. 2. Development of the central nervous system. 3. Formation of myelin around an axon. (05 Mar 2000) |
| myelogenetic | Myelogenic 1. Relating to myelogenesis. 2. Produced by or originating in the bone marrow. Synonym: myelogenous. (05 Mar 2000) |
| myelogenic | <physiology> Derived from, or pertaining to, the bone marrow. Origin: Gr. Marrow + the root of to be born. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |

| myelin basic protein |
(MBP) a basic protein (MW 18,000) that constitutes about 30 per cent of myelin proteins; elevated levels of MBP occur in acute exacerbation of multiple sclerosis and acute cerebral infarction. Immunization of laboratory animals with MBP produces encephalomyelitis by inducing T cell activity that leads to demyelination and lymphoid infiltration. Called also encephalitogenic p.
