A procedure used to help infertile couples conceive. The woman is treated with hormones to help her produce eggs, which are then removed and fertilized in the lab with the man's sperm. The eggs are then implanted into the mother's uterus. Sometimes a procedure known as assisted hatching is used before the eggs are implanted. Babies produced through IVF are sometimes called "test tube"babies. Also see Assisted hatching
