| hookworm d. |
1. in humans, infection with hookworms of the genera Ancylostoma and Necator, usually A. duodenale or N. americanus. It occurs in most tropical and subtropical countries, and in temperate regions it may occur in mines and tunnels where the temperature and moisture are similar to that in the tropics. The larvae live in soil and gain entrance to the digestive tract indirectly by way of the skin of the feet or legs or directly with contaminated food or water. The percutaneous infection is followed by a transitory eruption known as ground itch. From here the parasites are carried by the blood to the lungs, ascend the trachea, are swallowed, and settle in the small intestine, where they attach to the mucosa and ingest blood. Symptoms, which vary with diet and with severity of infection, may include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and colic or nausea. Anemia is seen only in moderate to severe infections or when other adverse nutritional factors operate in conjunction with the parasite-induced blood loss. See also ancylostomiasis and necatoriasis. 2. in mammals other than humans, infestation of the intestines with hookworms. Dogs and cats are usually infested by Ancylostoma or Uncinaria, and cattle and sheep by Bunostomum. See also ancylostomiasis, bunostomiasis, and uncinariasis.
