prominence of facial canal The prominence on the medial wall of the tympanic cavity above the vestibular (oval) window produced by the presence of the facial canal.
Synonym: prominentia canalis facialis.
(05 Mar 2000)
hiatus of facial canal The opening on the anterior aspect of the petrous part of the temporal bone which leads to the facial canal and gives passage to the greater petrosal nerve.
Synonym: hiatus canalis nervi petrosi majoris, fallopian hiatus, Ferrein's foramen, hiatus canalis facialis, hiatus of canal for greater petrosal nerve.
(05 Mar 2000)
horizontal part of facial canal First portion of facial canal, between beginning of canal (at the introitus of the facial canal at the end of the internal auditory meatus) and the point at which it turns to descend, beginning the descending part. There are two components (crura) of the horizontal part: the medially-located, anteriorly-directed medial crus and the laterally-placed, posteriorly-directed lateral crus, the two being continuous at a sharp bend, the genu of the facial canal. This lateral part is where the genicular ganglion is located and which communicates with the middle cranial fossa via the hiatus of the facial canal, through which the greater superficial petrosal nerve passes.
(05 Mar 2000)
superior facial index The length of the face is measured from the nasion to the alveolar point: (nasialveolar length × 100)/bizygomatic width; for
(05 Mar 2000)
deep facial vein <anatomy, vein> The communicating vein that passes from the pterygoid venous plexus of the infratemporal fossa to the facial vein; it is devoid of valves.
Synonym: vena faciei profunda.
(05 Mar 2000)
descending part of facial canal Second portion of the facial canal, after the horizontal parts, beginning at the posterior end of the lateral crus where the canal begins to descend. It runs vertically downward, ending at the stylomastoid foramen. Anteriorly, the descending part of the facial canal communicates with the tympanic cavity via the canaliculus for the nerve to the stapedius muscle and the posterior canaliculus of the chorda tympani.
(05 Mar 2000)
introitus of facial canal Entrance to facial canal, through which the facial nerve passes, at end of internal acoustic meatus.
Synonym: introitus canalis.
(05 Mar 2000)
oblique facial cleft Congenital facial cleft from mouth to the inner canthus of the eye.
Synonym: oblique facial cleft.
Origin: prosopo-+ G. Schisis, fissure
(05 Mar 2000)
tonsillar branch of the facial artery <anatomy, artery> Primary blood supply to palatine tonsil, with extensive anastomoses with other tonsillar arteries.
Synonym: ramus tonsillaris arteriae facialis.
(05 Mar 2000)
Topinard's facial angle See: Jacquart's facial angle.
(05 Mar 2000)
total facial index Length is measured from the nasion to the mental tubercle: (nasimental length × 100)/bizygomatic width.
(05 Mar 2000)
transverse facial artery <anatomy, artery> Origin, superficial temporal; distribution, parotid gland, parotid duct, masseter muscle, and overlying skin; anastomoses, infraorbital and buccal branches of maxillary, and buccal and masseteric branches of facial.
Synonym: arteria transversa faciei.
(05 Mar 2000)
transverse facial fracture A complex fracture in which the facial bones are separated from the cranial bones.
Synonym: Le Fort III craniofacial dysjunction, Le Fort III fracture, transverse facial fracture.
(05 Mar 2000)
transverse facial vein <anatomy, vein> A tributary of the superficial temporal or retromandibular veins, anastomosing with the facial vein.
Synonym: vena transversa faciei, transverse vein of face.
(05 Mar 2000)
Jacquart's facial angle A facial angle with the intersection always at the nasal spine point; additional variation uses the supraorbital point instead of the glabella, and this latter version is also known as ophryospinal facial angle or Topinard's facial angle.
