endoplasmic r. an ultramicroscopic organelle of nearly all cells of higher plants and animals, consisting of a more or less continuous system of membrane-bound cavities that ramify throughout the cytoplasm of a cell. Two forms have been distinguished: rough or granular r. (chromidial substance, ergastoplasm), which bears large numbers of ribosomes on the outer surface of its membrane and is basophilic, and smooth or agranular r., which contains no ribosomes and has no distinctive staining properties. Called also superior protoplasm.

endoplasmic reticulum A system of membranous sacs traversing the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells. Provides transportation for delivery of synthesized proteins or for secretion of substances to the cell

endoplasmic reticulum Highly convoluted sheet of membranes, extending from the outer layer of the nuclear envelope in the cytoplasm

endoplasmic reticulum (ER) An extended membranous organelle that proteins destined for the cell membrane or for export are synthesized within (or on). These proteins are extruded into the lumen of the ER as they are synthesized by ribosomes bound to docking proteins on the cytoplasmic surface. The proteins are then modified by glycosylation and other post translational modification in the Golgi Apparatus.
