| electron |
The negatively charged subatomic particle with charge 1.60218 x 10 -19 coulombs and rest mass 9.10939 x 10 -31 kg. Each element in the periodic table is characterized by a fixed number of electrons orbiting a much heavier nucleus. The mass of the electron is about 1/1836 that of the proton. See free electron, beta particle. Boorse, HA, and L. Motz, 1966: The World of the Atom, Vol. I, 408?26.
