systolic murmur <clinical sign> A sound that is produced by the turbulent flow of blood during the phase of ventricular contraction. The finding of a systolic murmur on physical examination can suggest a heart valve abnormality (for example aortic stenosis, mitral regurgitation, etc.).
(27 Sep 1997)
diamond-shaped murmur A crescendo-decrescendo murmur, from the shape of the frequency intensity curve of the phonocardiogram, often audible as such.
(05 Mar 2000)
diastolic murmur A murmur heard during diastole.
(05 Mar 2000)
Duroziez' murmur A two-phase murmur over peripheral arteries, especially the femoral artery, due to rapid ebb and flow of blood during aortic insufficiency.
Synonym: Duroziez' sign.
(05 Mar 2000)
dynamic murmur A heart murmur due to anaemia or to any cause other than a valvular lesion.
(05 Mar 2000)
innocent murmur A cardiac murmur not associated with a significant heart lesion.
Synonym: innocent murmur, inorganic murmur.
(05 Mar 2000)
inorganic murmur A cardiac murmur not associated with a significant heart lesion.
Synonym: innocent murmur, inorganic murmur.
(05 Mar 2000)
obstructive murmur A murmur caused by narrowing of one of the valvular orifices.
(05 Mar 2000)
organic murmur A murmur caused by an organic lesion.
(05 Mar 2000)
early diastolic murmur A murmur that begins with the second heart sound, as the murmur of aortic insufficiency.
(05 Mar 2000)
to-and-fro murmur Murmur heard in both systole and diastole of the heart, as in aortic stenosis and insufficiency.
Synonym: seesaw murmur.
(05 Mar 2000)
endocardial murmur A murmur arising, from any cause, within the heart.
(05 Mar 2000)
tricuspid murmur A murmur produced at the tricuspid orifice, either obstructive or regurgitant.
(05 Mar 2000)
extracardiac murmur A bruit heard over or near the precordium originating from structures other than the heart; the term includes pericardial friction rubs and cardiopulmonary murmur's.
(05 Mar 2000)
Flint's murmur A diastolic murmur, similar to that of mitral stenosis, heard best at the cardiac apex in some cases of free aortic insufficiency; it is thought to be caused by the turbulent regurgitating stream from the aorta mixing into the stream simultaneously entering from the left atrium through the mitral valve, causing posterior movement of the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve with transient acceleration of blood flow through the mitral valve.
Synonym: Austin Flint murmur.
