diffraction grating A holographic optical component that acts like a prism when it is illuminated with white light. Diffraction grating is achieved when two (or more) undiffused laser beams are directed so that they create an interference pattern on an emulsion. The zones and colors of diffraction can be controlled by making the beams pass through various media (lenses, plastics, etc.) or reflect off an object, or by doing multiple exposures. The resulting holograms are generally single-step transmission holograms.
