cyclic g. monophosphate a cyclic nucleotide, guanosine 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate, an intracellular “second messenger” similar in action to cyclic adenosine monophosphate (q.v.); the two cyclic nucleotides activate different protein kinases and usually produce opposite effects on cell function. Abbreviated 3′,5′-GMP, cGMP, and cyclic GMP.

cyclic n. 1. a chronic type of neutropenia that abates and recurs, accompanied by malaise, fever, stomatitis, and various types of infections. Called also periodic n.  2. a rare autosomal recessive disorder of gray collie dogs in which there is a bone marrow stem cell defect with periodic fluctuations in numbers of circulating neutrophils, platelets, and reticulocytes; during the episodes animals have lethargy, fever, arthralgias, and bacterial infections that can be fatal. Called also cyclic hematopoiesis and gray collie syndrome.
