cutaneous reaction The inflammatory reaction in the case of a skin test in a sensitive (allergic) subject.
Synonym: cutaneous reaction.
Origin: L. Cutis, skin, + reaction
(05 Mar 2000)
cutaneous reflex Wrinkling of the skin, caused by a cutaneous stimulus, due to contraction of arrectores pilorum muscles.
(05 Mar 2000)
cutaneous schistosomiasis japonica Schistosomiasis caused by schistosoma japonicum. It is endemic in the far east and affects the bowel, liver, and spleen.
(12 Dec 1998)
cutaneous T-cell lymphoma <oncology, tumour> A type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that first appears on the skin.
Synonym: mycosis fungoides.
(13 Nov 1997)
cutaneous test A method for determining induced sensitivity (allergy) by applying an antigen (allergen) to, or inoculating it into, the skin; induced sensitivity (allergy) to the specific antigen is indicated by an inflammatory reaction of one of two general kinds: 1) immediate, appears in minutes to an hour or so and in general is dependent upon circulating immunoglobulins (antibodies); 2) delayed, appears in 12 to 48 hours and is not dependent upon these soluble substances but upon cellular response and infiltration.
Synonym: cutaneous test, cutireaction test, skin reaction.
(05 Mar 2000)
cutaneous tuberculosis Pathologic lesions of the skin caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Synonym: dermal tuberculosis, tuberculosis cutis.
(05 Mar 2000)
cutaneous ureterostomy A stoma constructed of ureter at skin level for drainage of urine. This may be an end stoma or a loop stoma. Usually performed because of distal obstruction.
Synonym: cutaneous loop ureterostomy.
(05 Mar 2000)
cutaneous vasculitis An acute form of vasculitis which may affect the skin only, but also may involve other organs, with a polymorphonuclear infiltrate in the walls of and surrounding small (dermal) vessels. Nuclear fragments are formed by karyorrhexis of the neutrophils.
See: leukocytoclastic vasculitis.
Synonym: allergic angiitis, hypersensitivity vasculitis.
(05 Mar 2000)
cutaneous vein <anatomy, vein> One of a number of veins that course in the subcutaneous tissue and empty into deep veins; they form prominent systems of vessels in the limbs and are usually not accompanied by arteries.
Synonym: vena cutanea, cutaneous vein.
(05 Mar 2000)
superior lateral brachial cutaneous nerve <anatomy, nerve> The terminal branch of the axillary nerve supplying the skin over the lower portion of the deltoid and for a distance below its insertion.
Synonym: nervus cutaneus brachii lateralis superior, upper lateral cutaneous nerve of arm.
(05 Mar 2000)
syphilis, cutaneous Cutaneous lesions arising from infection with treponema pallidum. In the primary stage, 18-21 days following infection, one or more chancres appear. If untreated, the subsequent stages of the disease appear as syphilids. These eruptions are superficial, nondestructive, exanthematic, transient, macular roseolas that may later be maculopapular or papular polymorphous or scaly, pustular, pigmented eruptions.(arnold, odom, and james, andrew's diseases of the skin, 8th ed, p409)
(12 Dec 1998)
diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis Leishmaniasis caused by several New and Old World species and strains of Leishmania (L. Mexicana amazonensis, L. M. Pifanoi, possibly L. M. Garnhami and L. M. Venezuelensis; in Ethiopia, L. Aethiopica, and unidentified leishmanial agents in Namibia and Tanzania). The condition is associated with a suppressed cell-mediated immune response, so that the non-ulcerating, non-necrotizing cutaneous lesions can spread widely over the body; great numbers of parasite-filled macrophages are found in the dermal lesions. Healing does not appear to occur unless an acquired cellular hypersensitivity can develop.
Synonym: anergic leishmaniasis, diffuse leishmaniasis, disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis, leishmaniasis tegumentaria diffusa, pseudolepromatous leishmaniasis.
(05 Mar 2000)
diffuse cutaneous mastocytosis A benign process consisting of focal cutaneous infiltrates composed of mast cells; lesions are flat or slightly elevated, form wheals and itch when stroked; bone lesions may occur.
Synonym: urticaria pigmentosa.
(05 Mar 2000)
disseminated cutaneous gangrene A bullous or pustular eruption, of uncertain origin, followed by necrotic ulcers or extensive gangrene in children under 2 years of age; if untreated, death may result from haematogenous infection, such as liver abscess.
Synonym: disseminated cutaneous gangrene, ecthyma gangrenosum, pemphigus gangrenosus, rupia escharotica.
(05 Mar 2000)
disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis Leishmaniasis caused by several New and Old World species and strains of Leishmania (L. Mexicana amazonensis, L. M. Pifanoi, possibly L. M. Garnhami and L. M. Venezuelensis; in Ethiopia, L. Aethiopica, and unidentified leishmanial agents in Namibia and Tanzania).
