Compound preventing cell damage during freezing and thawing processes. Cryoprotectants are agents with high water solubility and low toxicity. Two types of cryoprotectant agent are commonly used: permeating (glycerol and DMSO (qv)) and non-permeating (sugars, dextran, ethylene glycol, polyvinyl pyrolidone and hydroxyethyl starch).
