one of the bands seen by light microscopy in fully contracted muscle on either side of the Z band, caused by distortion of the ends of the myosin filaments by the Z band.

contraction band n.
a cardiac lesion seen in patients with neurologically induced cardiographic changes, in myocardial biopsy specimens, and in cocaine or epinephrine toxicity, characterized by hypercontracted myofibrils with contraction bands and mitochondrial damage; it is caused by calcium ion influx into dying cells, which results in the arrest of cells in the contracted state, following severe ischemia and subsequent reperfusion. Called also coagulative myocytolysis.

contraction f.’s
brief, rhythmic twitching of a muscle during weak voluntary or postural contractions; seen in some elderly patients and those with neurogenic muscle atrophy.

contraction stress t.
the monitoring of the response of the fetal heart rate to uterine contractions by cardiotocography; uterine contractions may be spontaneous or induced by maternal nipple stimulation or by intravenous infusion of oxytocin (oxytocin challenge test). A negative (normal) test consists of three contractions within a 10-minute period with no deceleration of the fetal heart rate; a late deceleration pattern may reflect fetal hypoxia. Click here to view image■Contraction stress test. The top tracing of each pair shows the fetal heart rate; the bottom shows uterine contractions. (A), A negative (normal) result, with uterine contractions followed by an unchanged fetal heart rate. (B), A positive result, showing late deceleration with uterine contractions.
