| congestive heart failure |
Build up of fluid in the body...a condition of generalized fluid retension causing swelling and shortness of breath. When the heart cannot deliver enough blood to the body, then fluid is retained in the lungs or other tissues. Patients with severe heart failure are incapacitated by symptoms of shortness of breath, air hunger when laying flat, fatigue, swelling in the feet, and other problems. Reduced life expectancy is common. There are many causes, including valve or coronary disease.

| congestive heart failure |
A condition in which the heart cannot pump enough blood to the other organs. As blood flow out of the heart slows, blood returning to the heart through the veins backs up, causing congestion and swelling, most notably in the lower extremities. Fluid can collect in the lungs and interfere with breathing, causing shortness of breath, especially when a person is lying down. Heart failure also affects the kidneys' ability to dispose of sodium and water. The retained water increases the edema.
