a screening method for detecting the occurrence of a specific nucleic acid sequence in a heterogeneous population of bacterial colonies: a replica of a plate of colonies is prepared and all colonies are lysed with preservation of their relative positions; hybridization to the nucleic acid sequence of interest reveals the colonies carrying this sequence, and they can be retrieved from the master plate.
