A fetal monitoring technique in which a sample of chorionic villus is extracted through the cervix or abdomen. The sample is tested for chromosomal or biochemical abnormalities. Chorionic villi are the short folds of the outer membrane surrounding the fetus from which the placenta is formed.

Prenatal diagnostic procedure involving sampling the chorionic villi, generally performed between the tenth and twelfth weeks of pregnancy.
