A small, hollow, flexible tube is inserted at the groin, into a blood vessel and advanced to the heart. Dye that will show on X-ray is injected and, if the flow of blood to the heart muscle is blocked, it will show up on the X-ray as a narrowing. The doctor will then determine how much the flow is affected.

In this procedure a doctor guides a thin plastic tube or catheter through an artery or vein in the arm or leg and into the heart and the coronary arteries in the heart. This test can measure blood pressure and how much oxygen is in the blood, and provide other information about the pumping ability of the heart muscle or for treatment.
