subvalvar stenosis <cardiology> The congenital narrowing of the outflow tract of the left ventricle due to a ring of fibrous tissue or enlargement of the ventricular septum.
(27 Sep 1997)
supravalvar stenosis Narrowing of the aorta above the aortic valve by a constricting ring or shelf, or by coarctation or hypoplasia of the ascending aorta.
(05 Mar 2000)
supravalvular stenosis Stenosis distal to the aortic valve due usually to a congenital membrane. Patients usually have a kind of "elfin" facies and resemble each other more than they do members of their family.
(05 Mar 2000)
Dittrich's stenosis Narrowing of the outflow tract of the right ventricle below the pulmonic valve; may be due to a localised fibrous diaphragm just below the valve or, more commonly, to a long narrow fibromuscular channel.
Synonym: Dittrich's stenosis.
(05 Mar 2000)
idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis <cardiology> A congenital heart disease that results in abnormal thickening of the ventricular septum and left ventricular wall. Enlargement of the ventricular septum can result in ventricular outflow obstruction (subaortic stenosis) and eventual cardiomyopathy.
(27 Sep 1997)
infundibular stenosis Narrowing of the outflow tract of the right ventricle below the pulmonic valve; may be due to a localised fibrous diaphragm just below the valve or, more commonly, to a long narrow fibromuscular channel.
Synonym: Dittrich's stenosis.
(05 Mar 2000)
oesophageal stenosis Stricture of the oesophagus.
(12 Dec 1998)
tricuspid stenosis Pathologic narrowing of the orifice of the tricuspid valve.
(05 Mar 2000)
tricuspid valve stenosis The pathologic narrowing of the orifice of the tricuspid valve.
(12 Dec 1998)
fish-mouth mitral stenosis Extreme mitral stenosis.
(05 Mar 2000)
laryngeal stenosis Narrowing or stricture of any or all areas of the larynx; may be congenital or acquired.
(05 Mar 2000)
abdominal aortic aneurysm <surgery> A distended and weakened area in the wall of the abdominal aorta, more common in those who suffer from atherosclerosis.
Symptoms include sudden, severe abdominal pain with radiation to the back.
(27 Sep 1997)
abdominal aortic coarctation <radiology> 2% of all coarctations, (most common site is thoracic: just distal to origin of L SCA), may be isolated congenital anomaly, associated with: thoracic aortic coarctation, idiopathic hypercalcaemia syndrome, rubella syndrome (ToRCHS), Takayasu arteritis, neurofibromatosis, radiation therapy, fibromuscular disease
(12 Dec 1998)
abdominal aortic plexus <anatomy, neurology> An autonomic plexus surrounding the abdominal aorta, directly continuous with the thoracic aortic plexus above and continued inferior to the bifurcation of the aorta as the superior hypogastric plexus.
Synonym: plexus aorticus abdominalis.
(05 Mar 2000)
acute aortic dissection <cardiology> A condition in which a weakened portion of the thoracic aorta begins to tear along the longitudinal axis of the vessel.
Symptoms include sudden, severe chest pain that may radiate to the back accompanied by nausea, sweating and difficulty breathing. A common risk factor for this event is atherosclerotic vascular disease and-or hypertension. Advanced cases of syphilis (syphilitic aortitis) can also result in acute thoracic dissection as a complication of infection with Treponema pallidum.
