| base pairing |
A process involving the linking of the complementary pair of polynucleotide chains of deoxyribonucleic acid by means of hydrogen bonds between the opposite purine and pyrimidine pairs. Stable base pairs form only between adenine and thymine (AT) and guanine and cytosine (GC). In ribonucleic acid, uracil replaces thymine and can form a base pair with adenine.
