| carcinoma, basal cell | A malignant skin neoplasm that seldom metastasizes but has potentialities for local invasion and destruction. Clinically it is divided into types: nodular, cicatricial, morphaic, and erythematoid (pagetoid). More than 95% of these carcinomas occur in patients over 40. They develop on hair-bearing skin, most commonly on sun-exposed areas. Approximately 85% are found on the head and neck area and the remaining 15% on the trunk and limbs. (12 Dec 1998) |
| rate, basal metabolic | A measure of the rate of metabolism. For example, someone with an overly active thyroid will have an elevated basal metabolic rate. (12 Dec 1998) |
| relative basal area | An estimate of basal area for trees, such as produced by the Bitterlich sampling technique. (09 Oct 1997) |
| medial basal branch of pulmonary artery | <anatomy, artery> A branch of the basal part of inferior lobar branches of the left and right pulmonary arteries. Synonym: ramus basalis medialis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| medial basal segment | Cardiac segment; medial basal segment of inferior lobe of right and left lung; can only be seen from medial and inferior surfaces since it does not reach lateral surface of lung. Synonym: segmentum basale mediale, segmentum cardiacum, cardiac segment. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Weil's basal layer | The layer beneath the odontoblasts of the tooth; it contains reticular fibres but few if any cells. Synonym: Weil's basal zone. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Weil's basal zone | The layer beneath the odontoblasts of the tooth; it contains reticular fibres but few if any cells. Synonym: Weil's basal zone. (05 Mar 2000) |
| common basal vein | <anatomy, vein> The tributary to the inferior pulmonary vein (right and left) that receives blood from the superior and inferior basal veins. Synonym: vena basalis communis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| posterior basal branch | Posterior basal branch of the basal part of the inferior lobar branch of the left and right pulmonary arteries. Synonym: ramus basalis posterior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| posterior basal segment | Posterior basal segment of inferior lobe of right and left lungs; lies adjacent to vertebral column below superior segment. Synonym: segmentum basale posterius. (05 Mar 2000) |
| neoplasms, basal cell | Neoplasms composed of cells from the deepest layer of the epidermis. The concept does not refer to neoplasms located in the stratum basale. (12 Dec 1998) |
| nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome | <syndrome> An inherited group of defects which involve abnormalities of the skin, eyes, nervous system, endocrine, glands and bones. The condition is characterised by an unusual facial appearance and a predisposition for skin cancer. (27 Sep 1997) |
| superior basal vein | <anatomy, vein> Tributary to the common basal vein draining the lateral and anterior part of the inferior lobe of each lung. Synonym: vena basalis superior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| denture basal surface | That portion of the surface of a denture which has its contour determined by the impression and bears the greater part of the occlusal load. Synonym: denture basal surface. (05 Mar 2000) |
