alternative medicine Refers to any therapy used instead of, or in supplement to, conventional therapy. For example, a clinician might use acupuncture instead of analgesics.

alternative complement p. a pathway of complement activation initiated by a variety of factors other than those initiating the classical pathway, including IgA immune complexes, bacterial endotoxins, microbial polysaccharides, and cell walls. It does not include factors C1, C2, and C4 of the classical complement pathway but does include factors B and D and properdin. See illustration at complement. The term is sometimes used to denote specifically those steps occurring prior to initiation of formation of the membrane attack complex (C5–C9).
