an X-linked disorder is caused by a mutation in a gene on the X chromosome. Women have two X chromosomes, while men have an X chromosome and aY chromosome. Because men have only one X chromosome, if a gene on their X chromosome is mutated, it could lead to disease. However, if women have a mutated gene on one X chromosome, they still have one "correct" copy of the gene on their other X chromosome, and so they may not be affected by the mutation.
