This is probably the term which English-speaking stein collectors most wish was used with careful precision. There have been numerous attempts at this definition, but the commonly accepted meaning is "a drinking vessel which has a handle and a lid". The lid is frequently attached to the body and uses a hinge to open, but set-on lids are also allowed.
