palatomaxillary Relating to the palate and the maxilla.
(05 Mar 2000)
palatomaxillary index Relation of the palatomaxillary width, measured between the outer borders of the alveolar arch just above the middle of the second molar tooth, and the palatomaxillary length, measured from the alveolar point to the middle of a transverse line touching the posterior borders of the two maxillae: (palatomaxillary width × 100)/palatomaxillary length; it notes the varying forms of the dental arcade and palate.
Synonym: palatal index, palatine index.
(05 Mar 2000)
palatomaxillary suture Line of union, in the floor of the orbit, between the orbital process of the palatine bone and the orbital surface of the maxilla.
Synonym: sutura palatomaxillaris.
(05 Mar 2000)
palatomyograph Synonym: palatograph.
Origin: G. Palato-+ mys, muscle, + grapho, to record
(05 Mar 2000)
palatonares <anatomy> The posterior nares.
Origin: NL. See Palato-, and Nares.

(01 Mar 1998)
palatonasal Relating to the palate and the nasal cavity.
(05 Mar 2000)
palatopharyngeal Relating to palate and pharynx.
(05 Mar 2000)
palatopharyngeal arch One of a pair of ridges or folds of mucous membrane which passes downward from the posterior margin of the soft palate to the lateral wall of the pharynx. It encloses the palatopharyngeus muscle and forms the posterior margin of the tonsillar fossa. It also demarcates the isthmus of fauces from oropharynx.
Synonym: arcus palatopharyngeus, pharyngopalatine arch, posterior palatine arch, posterior pillar of fauces.
(05 Mar 2000)
palatopharyngeal muscle <anatomy, muscle> Origin, soft palate; forms the posterior pillar of the fauces or tonsillar fossa; insertion, posterior border of thyroid cartilage and aponeurosis of pharynx; action, narrows fauces, depresses soft palate, elevates pharynx and larynx; nerve supply, pharyngeal plexus (cranial root of accessory nerve).
Synonym: musculus palatopharyngeus, musculus pharyngopalatinus, palatopharyngeal muscle, palatopharyngeus, pharyngopalatinus, pharyngostaphylinus.
(05 Mar 2000)
palatopharyngeal sphincter A constant band of the superior pharyngeal constrictor muscle which sweeps posteriorly from the anterolateral part of the superior surface of the palatine aponeurosis. It creates a visible ridge when the superior constrictor is contracted, meeting the elevated soft palate to seal off the pharyngeal isthmus during swallowing.
Synonym: pharyngeal ridge, sphincter of the pharyngeal isthmus, velopharyngeal sphincter.
(05 Mar 2000)
palatopharyngeus <anatomy, muscle> Origin, soft palate; forms the posterior pillar of the fauces or tonsillar fossa; insertion, posterior border of thyroid cartilage and aponeurosis of pharynx; action, narrows fauces, depresses soft palate, elevates pharynx and larynx; nerve supply, pharyngeal plexus (cranial root of accessory nerve).
Synonym: musculus palatopharyngeus, musculus pharyngopalatinus, palatopharyngeal muscle, palatopharyngeus, pharyngopalatinus, pharyngostaphylinus.
(05 Mar 2000)
palatopharyngoplasty <procedure> Surgical resection of unnecessary palatal and oropharyngeal tissue in selected cases of snoring, with or without sleep apnea.
This technique has proven effective in approximately 50% of cases, when undertaken to cure sleep apnea. Pharmacological treatment of apnea generally fails to correct the problem, thus surgery has offered the best recourse in extreme cases. New mechanical devices which prevent the pharynx from collapsing also appear promising.
Synonym: uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, uvulopalatoplasty.
Origin: palato-+ pharynx, + plastos, formed.
(05 Mar 2000)
palatopharyngorrhaphy Synonym: staphylopharyngorrhaphy.
Origin: palato-+ pharynx + G. Rhaphe, suture
