| Lucio's l. |
a form characterized by diffuse lepromatous infiltration of the skin occurring especially in Latin America, particularly in Costa Rica and Mexico. Advanced cases may be complicated by a reactional state (Lucio's phenomenon) in which multiple areas of obstructive vasculitis cause dermal necrosis with resultant ulcers that heal with scarring. Called also diffuse l. of Lucio and lazarine l.

a local exacerbation reaction occurring in diffuse lepromatous leprosy, with ischemic necrosis of the epidermis due to necrotizing vasculitis of small blood vessels of the subpapillary plexus; small erythematous lesions then erupt and have central necrosis; if the eschar is shed, ulceration can be seen, with eventual scar formation. Cf. erythema nodosum leprosum.
