Heatsink & Fan. A heatsink is a metal (normally aluminium or copper) block, which is placed on top of the CPU with thermal compound between the core and the bottom of the heatsink. It absorbs the heat given off by the CPU. It has a large surface area due to large numbers of fins, thus allowing more heat to be lost. A fan blows air down through the heatsink to carry away the heat via forced air flow.
