Clostridium histolyticum c. any of several forms of microbial collagenase isolated from Clostridium histolyticum that catalyze the cleavage of collagen into small fragments, cleaving it in the triple helical region N-terminal to glycine residues. The extracellular Zn2+ enzyme degrades the collagen framework of muscles, facilitating the spread of gas gangrene by C. histolyticum.
