capacitation The process by which sperm are prepared for fertilization as they pass through the woman's reproductive tract (in vivo capacitation); sperm may also be capacitated in the laboratory (in vitro capacitation).

capacitation a series of biochemical events that sperm undergo while traveling through the female reproductive tract. Sperm capacitation allows the sperm to acrosome react. Capacitation is necessary in order for a sperm to fertilize the egg.

capacitor A device that consists of two conductors (such as parallel metal plates) insulated from each other by a dielectric. A capacitor introduces capacitance (ie, the ratio of the charge on one of the conductors of a capacitor to the potential difference between the conductors) into a circuit, stores electrical energy, blocks the flow of direct current, and permits the flow of alternating current.

capacitation A process that occurs in sperm, which gives them the ability to penetrate and fertilise an ovum, as they pass through the female genital tract. This can also be mimicked in a culture medium when assisted techniques of reproduction are taking place.

capacitance An element (capacitor) in an electrical circuit capable of separating charges and storing electrical energy. In cells, membranes have capacitor properties contributing to the storage of electrochemical energy (ion gradients).
